Closed captions

Closed captions (formerly and commonly referred to as subtitles) display text for sounds in-game. This feature is mainly intended for players who have hearing impairments, are deaf, or play with sounds off. They can also be used for hearing quieter sounds, locating sounds, or identifying sounds a player doesn't recognize.[1]

Closed captions can be enabled in the "Accessibility" section of the options/settings menu for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. In Java Edition, you can also enable these in the "Music & Sounds" options.‌[JE only]

In Bedrock Edition, there are also various settings to customize closed captions, namely the time they are shown, whether to hide a player's own sounds, whether to hide environmental and weather sounds, and the location of the closed captions.
