Herobrine

Herobrine is the subject of a community-made creepypasta. Despite being absent from all official versions of the game, he is widely regarded as one of the major community icons of Minecraft.

The first stories and images ever posted about Herobrine, as well as the Brocraft streams, are regarded as canonical, as they were fundamental to the creation and popularization of the character. Any portrayals of the character created after these events are considered fan-made adaptations and variations.

Herobrine does not exist in any official versions of Minecraft, and never has. There are no references to him at all in the game's source code, and there is no code to allow for any entity to act like Herobrine. It is not possible for Herobrine to have ever existed in any unmodified clients or servers. Any appearances of Herobrine are caused by either unofficial modifications being installed, or because of another player using a customized skin texture to resemble the character.
