Sienna Dunes is located in a desert. Roughly an hour's walk away from the village is a site called the Great Rift, a canyon with a half-exposed desert pyramid buried into the side. In another direction is a mountain with a cave that was the original home of the Ender dragon.

Sienna Dunes has a vibrant terracotta mining scene, and much of the town's infrastructure is built out of the material, including a wall, which is rebuilt multiple times over the course of the book. The village has other infrastructure, such as houses and a few farms.

Long ago, the mother of Zetta built an automated sugar cane farm, then left for a nearby mountain.
Later, a raid occurred on the village, destroying much of the east side of the wall. The town engaged in a small burst of mining to renovate the wall, as well as to add four watchtowers. A second raid was interrupted by the first public appearance of the Ender dragon, who destroyed the bell tower, the well, and much of the town hall.

The village has a school, though the details of it are not known, and at one point an adult mentions their "shift" in the terracotta mine.
