Villager professions

Villager professions are multiple jobs that villagers can obtain. Certain workstations can be used to employ villagers and give them a job.

Villagers without a profession may gain a profession by claiming a job site block. Unemployed villagers always actively seek to claim a job site. A job site block can only be claimed by a villager if no other villagers have claimed it. The removal of a job site block that a villager has claimed causes that villager to lose its profession, unless the villager has prior trades.

Villagers that already have been traded with cannot lose their profession, even in the case of the removal of their job site block. If a villager that already has prior trades loses its job site block, it will seek to claim a new job site block that matches its profession.

Gaining a profession

Villagers without a profession may gain a profession by claiming a job site block. Unemployed villagers always actively seek to claim a job site. A job site block can only be claimed by a villager if no other villagers have claimed it. The removal of a job site block that a villager has claimed causes that villager to lose its profession, unless the villager has prior trades.

Villagers that already have been traded with cannot lose their profession, even in the case of the removal of their job site block. If a villager that already has prior trades loses its job site block, it will seek to claim a new job site block that matches its profession.

When a villager claims a job site block, the block and the villager emit green particles.

Trading

When a villager gains a profession, it also gains trades associated with that profession.

Movement

Job site block

In Java Edition, an unemployed villager looks for the nearest unclaimed job site within a 48-block sphere of its location. When a site is found, the villager pathfinds to it while creating a temporary claim on the site, meaning that no other unemployed villager may claim it. The temporary claim is removed if the villager cannot reach to the job site in 60 seconds, but the villager can try again immediately.[1] To claim a job site, a villager must come within a two-block radius of the job site block's center.

In Bedrock Edition, all villagers in a village search in a 16-block radius and 4-block height for unclaimed job sites. These sites are then added to a list for the entire village. A random unemployed villager with a bed claims the first job site block regardless of distance or whether the villager is asleep.[2]

Daily activities

Villagers with a profession walk to their claimed job site block every day.

Unemployed villagers and nitwits simply wander.

Non-Trading villagers

Nitwits cannot gain a profession and do not search for a job site block.

Baby Villagers cannot get a profession or trade.
